Easy Felted Bag

This is a good basic bag to embellish with needle felting or embroidery.

Yarn:  130 yards of super bulky, such as Brown Sheep Burly Spun

Needles:  #17  24-inch circulars and double points.

Make i-cord handle first.

Cast on 4 st., knit i-cord for 48 inches, cast off.

For bag:  Begin with bag bottom.

With circular needles, cast on 20 st.  Knit back and forth for 8 rows.

Place marker, pick up 4 stitches along  closest short side,

20 stitches along long side,  4 stitches along other short side.
Then knit 20 stitches along original long side.

You now be knitting in the round and have a total of 48 stitches.

Make the sides of the bag as follows:

Knit around even for 2 rows.

*Knit 11, knit1make1 in next stitch* around (52 st).

Knit around even for 2 rows.

Knit 6, knit1make1, *knit 12, knit1make1* 3 times, knit 6 (56 st).

Knit around even until sides measure 6 inches tall from bottom of bag.

Knit 6, knit 2 together, *knit 12, knit 2 together* 3 times, knit 6 (52 st).

Knit around even for 4 rows.

*Knit 11, knit 2 together around* (48 st) .

Knit 5, knit 2 together, *Knit 10, knit 2 together* 3 times, knit 5 (44 st).

*Knit 1 round, purl 1 round* 3 times.

Cast off all 44 stitches.

Using yarn, sew ends of i-cord handle to sides of bag.  One option for a closure is to crochet chain an 8” length of yarn, form it into a loop, and attach it to inside of one long side of bag.

To felt:  Put bag in an old pillow case, tie shut with cotton cord.  Set washing machine to hottest water, lowest water level, and highest agitation.  Add a bit of mild shampoo.  Let bag agitate for about 15 minutes.  Do not use spin cycle- you might get permanent creases in your bag.  After felting, remove bag from pillow case, rinse by hand in cool water, roll in towels to absorb excess moisture, shape on a  dry towel, and let dry.  Enjoy!
